About Gerti Landwehr

Gerti Landwehr is a graduate of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. For many years, she applied her visual expertise to the commercial world, serving as a creative director at various advertising agencies. This professional chapter lasted until 2021, when she decided to pivot away from the agency landscape to devote herself entirely to her personal artistic work and independent practice.

Her creative process is defined by a delicate and meticulous execution. Every aspect of the preparation is intentional; the canvas, format, and size are chosen specifically to correspond with the inner narrative of the portrait. Landwehr begins her work directly on the canvas, typically using graphite to create an initial draft that serves as the foundation for her complex, layered compositions.

Artistic Style and Statement

Formally, Landwehr’s style navigates the space between figuration and abstraction. Her portraits are designed as “resonance chambers” rather than simple likenesses, using strong color combinations, decisive brushstrokes, and transparent layers to create a field where emotions appear to manifest in real time. By capturing subtle nuances — such as the tension of an eyelid or the reflection of light in an eye — she creates a counterpoint to the modern flood of fleeting images, slowing down the viewer’s gaze and sharpening their perception of nonverbal signals.

This technical approach is driven by a philosophy she describes as the “ethics of seeing,” an invitation to look at the world with deeper empathy. As Landwehr notes in her artist statement:

“In essence, it is all about that silent, nonverbal gesture that defines relationships. My painting makes these subtle signals visible and invites us to read them more consciously — in the artwork as in life. In this way, art once again becomes a resonance between people. That is precisely why I paint: to open up spaces where seeing becomes encounter and our togetherness gains tangible meaning.”
